NSC and UNLV faculty members collaborate, receive $3.25 Million R01 Grant

NSC chemistry professor, Dr. Amber Howerton, worked with UNLV faculty to earn a five-year, $3.25 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in December. The grant was awarded to support the efforts of Dr. Howerton and UNLV chemistry professor, Dr. Ernesto Abel-Santos, as they continue their research on a drug aimed at preventing Clostridium difficile, or C. diff.

In December 2014, the Dr. Joel and Carol Bower School-Based Health Center (SBHC) had its Certification Visit from the The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (NDPBH), Bureau of Child, Family, and Community Wellness. The SBHC was approved for certification, and awarded a certificate which states, The Dr. Joel and Carol Bower SBHC has successfully met the Nevada SBHC Standards for Certification. The Director of the School-Based Health Center, Dr. Sherri Coffman, was very excited about this accomplishment. We have been working very hard for this, she said. I m so pleased to announce that we passed with flying colors!

The event was held at the Cheyenne Campus of the College of Southern Nevada, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hundreds of staff and faculty members from Southern Nevada institutions attended the event, including a large contingency from NSC.

It's been a busy year for NSSA, announced Student Activities Advisor Jerica Turek at the Nevada State Student Association (NSSA) End-of-Year banquet and Installation Ceremony. This year has been incredibly successful, with improvements in every area, she said. The organization boasts an increased number of NSSA events, a 10% higher attendance rate from last year to this year, a record number of 25 registered clubs and organizations, and improvement in the programs and services offered to students, among other accomplishments.

Marydean Martin generously contributed a significant amount of money to support the expansion of the NSC Library. Marydean is a tireless advocate to support the value of learning for future generations of NSC students. Her first large contribution came in the summer of 2002 - as the college prepared to open for the first time, with the donation of numerous crates of her personal book collection, Patterson said.

This week, the Recording Academy announced that the three-CD box set, "Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection," had been nominated for the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards in two categories: best historical album and best packaging for a boxed set.

NSC students join Andson Foundation to provide tutoring to local children in summer literacy program

Education majors at Nevada State College had a unique opportunity this summer to join forces with the Andson Foundation to participate in the Rockstar Readers Summer Literacy Program as tutors. An initiative developed by the Andson Foundation, the program is aimed to continue the literacy development of elementary students on summer break while also encouraging a love for reading at an early age.

Discovery of oldest-known Woody Guthrie recordings credited to NSC professor

The four songs, recorded off the two discs I found, are essentially the oldest known Woody Guthrie recordings in existence, said La Chapelle. The discs, called Prestos, were 10-inches in diameter, ran at 78 rpm and were composed of lacquer-covered aluminum.

Since 2009 we have more than tripled the dollar amount of funds awarded to our students and that number continues to grow, stated Neil Woolf, director of financial aid at NSC.
